Data Sites Print E-mail

These sites are all filled with wondrous amounts of data:

AccessGenealogy - A compendium of Links to free genealogy websites for New York.

Buffalo Area Research - An excellent site for information on how to do research in the Buffalo, NY area. Brought to you by Cynthia Van Ness [aka: Betty Barcode] and has a list of links to 175 digital on-line books about Buffalo History and Genealogy research.

Central NY Links - If you are coming to the Central New York area to do research, then this is a great resource for ideas on where to go and what to do.

Cornell University Library - Digital Collections (on-line) - Cornell is in the process of bringing thousands of books, pamphlets, monographs, maps, art works, photographic collections, and countless other items in many catagories. This collection is particularly useful for those performing historical and genealogical research in New York State. Here are just two collections to whet your appetite:
- "New York State Historical Literature"
- "Making of America"
And it does not stop there. (See you in the Spring.)

Cousin Connect - The Genealogy Query Database. The place to search for, and place your genealogical queries, almost 90 thousand on-line to date as of November 2005.

Darcis Place - This is a wonderful website that will launch you into several new and wondrous resources for New York State research.

Jane Devlin's website - Rich in Middlesex Co., CT., but also has large amounts of Upstate New York Data.

Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter - One of the most informative and helpful sites on the Internet.

Free Website Hosting for Genealogy - A place to get started with your own website. This is the company that I started with a couple of years ago. It was absolutely painless, free and easy to develop. First I had a freewebs account, then I subscribed to their Premium Services (cheap too) and purchased my own domain name. Just recently I have switched over to a very high powered (economical) webhost at www.s-go.net and this website that you currently are seeing is the result. I am very satisfied with the new service but still recommend highly freewebs to get started with. C'mon jump in with both feet, the water's warm!

GenealogyBank - A subscription site that is filled with unique data.  You will find Historical Newspapers, Historical Books, Historical Documents, America's Obituaries and the Social Security Death Index, (the only SSDI site that is updated weekly and current.)  There are now over 214 Million Family History Records and there is a Very Special Discount Rate for Upstate New York Genealogy viewers!  The site is free to do your search on, and then after you see what they have you WILL want to join!

Genealogical Publishing Co. - A very LARGE Publishing Company with over 2,000 Genealogy and Local History Books and CD-ROMs.

Genealogy Today - An excellent list of Links to Genealogy websites related to New York Research, and everywhere else for that matter.

Germans of Syracuse and Onondaga County - Michelle Stones' terrific site for searching for information on the families of the large German population in the Syracuse, NY areas. Lots of German immigrants came to work in the various businesses and farming communities in early Onondaga County including many that worked in the Salt Making and Associated Industries like coopering and basket making.

The Godfrey Library -  A Library created exclusively for genealogical research. Godfrey has some phenomenal newspaper search engines and new materials are being added all the time.

Kip Sperry - A catalog of LINKS that will be helpful to all researchers.  Read our review by searching the "UNYG Blog."

LDS, Family Search, main portal - Start here to search for all ancestors.

LDS, Library Catalog Search Page - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Mormon Church's Family History Library.

LDS, New York State Research Guidance Page - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Mormon Church's Family History Library.

LINKPENDIUM for New York State - Many good links for NYS

Madison County / INGALLS Family - Several unique Madison County items and much about the INGALLS Family - Sent by Anita Ingalls.

Michigan County Histories - A great many Yorkers went out to the upper mid-west and a search of the digitized books of the Michigan County Histories will possibly locate some of your wandering ancestors.

Military Records Online - A great collection of military resources.

Monroe County   - Resources and Links for research in the Rochester and Monroe County areas.

National Archives (NARA) - Access to Archival Databases (AAD). Use their great search engines and finding aids.

MYNEWYORKGENEALOGY - An extensive amount of resources listed for New York State.

New York Genealogy - Resources for Family History Research. Operated by Kindred Trails, Fee Based, but many free NYS tools.

Northern New York Newspapers - On-line and free. Brought to you by the Northern New York Library Network. Newspapers currently available: (Full text search.)
Adirondack Record-Elizabethtown Post, 1917-1971
Akwesasne Indian Time, 1982-2002
Canton Commercial Advertiser, 1900-1952
Elizabethtown Post, 1882-1920
Fort Covington Sun, 1887-1987

Malone Farmer, 1900-1936
Malone Franklin Gazette, 1876-1899
Plattsburgh Republican, 1811-1820
Plattsburgh Sentinel, 1866-1931
Potsdam Herald-Recorder, 1906-1951
Potsdam St. Lawrence Herald, 1897-1904
Saranac Lake Adirondack Daily Enterprise, 1948-1976
Ticonderoga Sentinel, 1874-1950

NYS GenWeb - Search at county level. One of the best free sites on the web.

NYS Archives (SARA) and NYS Library - Search the on-line catalog of all of the State Library Holdings at the same time.

North East Genealogy - With Census Maps of NYS, see what the county outline arrangement would be for each of the federal census years.

Onondaga County Public Library (OCPL) - The Local History/Genealogy department is absolutely the very best in all of Upstate New York, and rates very high in all of the North East.  Their very strong collection of published and unique Genealogies and Local History books has grown tremendously throughout all of the 20th Century and all indications are that it will be that way from now on.  They are a must visit if you are travelling to do Family History research, and their on-line databases may be accessed by anyone with a library card.  The on-line catalog of the collection is searchable for free from anywhere at www.onlib.org.   Note: The latest on-line database is ReferenceUSA, an excellent tool.  Have your Library Card Ready!

Post-Standard Newspaper Archive - Syracuse, NY. This site has archive copies of old Syracuse, NY newspapers, fully searcheable. It is a subscription based service, but well worth the money. (ps: If anyone knows of any other newspapers from Upstate New York locations that are on-line and not listed on this Links list, please let me know.)

Ray's Place - Primarily for New England but has "MANY" NYS Town Histories on-line and operates a chat room for NYS Genealogy.

Rochester, NY City Street Directories - Rochester, Monroe Co., NY., early City Street Directories. These will give you the person's name, occupation, business address and home address. They are very helpful and I only hope other major libraries in the state will follow the lead.

SAMPUBCO - Based in the Salt Lake City area, this company will photocopy WILLS and GUARDIANSHIPS and some other types of records from the microfilms at the Family History Library. Take a look at their very impressive catalog on-line and I recommend the service highly. Bear in mind that WILLS are not the only things available in a person's Estate File. There are scads of other very important documents available, so if you do find a will, you should then send to the proper court of record and get a photocopy of the ENTIRE Estate Record Packet. Oh and by the way, if the decedant died intestate (without a will) you are sometimes able to find even more information in the Estate Record Packet, because the court was obligated to attempt to locate each and every possible heir and next of kin. I do not believe all of the "Intestate" or also called "Administration" files are indexed or available at SAMPUBCO, but you might want to check.

Steven Morse - This site is probably the most helpful site on the Internet for Immigration, Naturalization, Ships Passenger Lists, and Census searching methods.

Troy Irish Genealogy Society (TIGS) - This group of volunteers index many different things from Rensselaer County and make them freely available on their website.  Reviewed at: http://www.unyg.com/blog/index.php/2010/04/troy-irish-genealogy-society-tigs-not-just-for-the-irish/

US GenWeb - "Land of the Free... Genealogy." The Same as the NYS GenWeb but for the Whole Country.

USGS/GNIS - United States Geographical Survey / Geographical Names Information System (phew!) - Search for ANY Location in the United States. Get Topo Maps and Satellite Images.

Tools Print E-mail

Very handy tools to use while working on your research project:

Acronyms - Initials of Organizations - Geoff Brown of Between the Lakes Publishing sponsors this site that is very useful for determining the names of Organizations that are commonly known by just their Initials.

Birth Date Calculator - from Known Age and Date of Death.

Deed Platter - Draws Property Maps From Deed Description.

 -  Eastman's Encyclopedia of Genealogy - Dick Eastman hosts this on-line Encyclopedia that is dynamic and ever growing.  A very handy tool indeed!

Karen's Power Tools - Karen Kenworthy's Power Tools for Windows - Several very useful utilities for those that like to tweak their operating system.

Reference Desk - Not necessarily genealogy, but information on just about everything.

Soundex Converter - An excellent tool to give you that crazy little Soundex number.

tucows - My favorite download site for ALL types of shareware, freeware, and commercial software downloads.  I have been using this site for many years and NEVER have downloaded any software that had viruses or trojans, (that I know of that is.)  The programs have all been tested and have good descriptions and reviews, and they have the famous tucows number of cows rating system of a one to five cow rating.  Search for anything you might need, or don't need but want to play with, and pick the server to download from.  I suggest making a new folder to download into because when you unzip or run the setup program it will keep all the junk in that folder and if you ever need to uninstall the program you can get rid of all traces of it by deleting the folder AFTER you uninstall.

Wikipedia - A free on-line Encyclopedia of everything!
